On February 13 and 14, all 6th through 12th grade girls are invited to join us at the Revolve Tour. The Revolve Tour is a Friday night and Saturday event that gives the girls an opportunity to let their hair down. Friday night we’ll have an amazing slumber party at a host home, and Saturday morning we’ll go back to the Revolve Tour as a group.

The primary purpose of the Revolve Tour is to communicate to teen girls that God loves them, just as they are, and to draw them into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. Beyond that, we want to encourage girls to build healthy relationships with adults and their peers.

We’ll hear speakers such Jenna Lucado, Chad Eastham, and Danielle Kimmey discuss real-life issues, and worship will be lead by Natalie Grant, Hawk Nelson, and Group 1 Crew. If you and/or your daughter would like to attend, please return the registration form to Lisa Lett by Friday, February 6.

Shirley Beyer, M.Ed., LPC, will be presenting “Navigating Through Change” on January 20^th at 6:30 pm at the St. Luke’s Center for Counseling and Life Enrichment to kick off our 2009 Speaker Series. Shirley says, “Change is a fact of life and people accept change in different ways.” She will be exploring how change does not have to be viewed as a negative thing and can be about “transition and transformation.” In this workshop “we will discuss the various ways an individual or an entire system can work positively through the process of change.”

As Sandra Scott says in her book, Starting Again: A Divorce Recovery Program, “The emotional work to be done after a divorce is essential. Grieving, adjustment, charting a new course – all are work, but the rewards are priceless.”

Divorce Recovery classes are designed to help individuals work through the issues associated with divorce and facilitate the healing process. Dr. Kelton Ro-Trock will lead these classes which will meet in the Center for Counseling and Life Enrichment at 9:45 a.m. on Sundays January 18, 22, February 1, and 8. There is no fee for the class and it is open to non-members of the church as well as members.

Last summer, the Fine Arts Ministry held a Poetry Contest and invited interested poets to submit unpublished works for consideration. The winning poem was to be displayed in our three Poet's Corners and on our website during the months of September/October, 2008. As it turned out, we received over 56 entries, and choosing just one became impossible. So the panel of judges selected three that were mutual favorites; the first one was displayed last fall, and the other two were scheduled for display in 2009.

2009 has arrived, and our second winning poem is now on display. "Swirl" by Cheryl Lindberg Fleming is a wonderfully crafted piece that ties the creation of our universe to the creation of Art- design, music and dance, in particular. Cheryl's descriptive words are a delight to read aloud, and their imagery is potent. She speaks of how "winds gathered foam from curling seas and harnessed volcanoes roar," and of "galaxies akin to sequins swirling silently without light."

Cheryl is a published poet and has enjoyed a distinguished career in opera, musical theatre and sacred oratorio as a singer, director and producer. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music (cum laude) from California Lutheran University. She also received Departmental Honors for her Bachelor’s work. Cheryl’s Master of Arts degree in Vocal Performance was granted by the California State University at Northridge. She also did advanced degree studies in Vocal Performance at the University of Southern California and the University of Oklahoma.

Cheryl's connection to St. Luke's is that she is our founding pastor, Dr. Durwood Fleming's daughter-in-law. She is married to Dr. Jon H. Fleming, and they have six children and eleven grandchildren. Currently the Flemings live on their ranch close by College Station with their three Australian Shepherds.

We are delighted to display Cheryl's outstanding poem during the months of January/February. Please make a special trip by one of our Poet's Corners to enjoy "Swirl", or go to the Visual Arts page of our website.

Swirl

When the universe shimmered with galaxies akin

to sequins swirling silently without light,

Primordial were thoughts that coalesced

until they formed the essence of what now exists.

Abstractions morphed into glimmering shapes.

Visual manifestations of structure and form,

a wonder now called Design.

Then winds gathered foam from curling seas

and harnessed volcanoes' roar,

until Sound surrendered and molded each note,

in an instant, Music was born.

Birds soared in the heavens creating displays

with pathways cut through space.

Clouds joined the ensemble creating the stage

whereon Dance vaulted into place.

Revised and rewritten, interpreted, newly found,

Whether aural or visual the composite parts,

Great galaxies settled and begin to refine,

From its conception,

Then gestation-

Life has always created Art.

Our artist of the month in the Rotunda Gallery is Michael Anthony Ewing, from Missouri City, TX. Michael is the Associate Pastor of The Fellowship of Love Church in west Houston. Born in Milton, Florida, he and his family relocated to Houston when he was 11 years old.

Michael is an emerging artist on the brink of discovery. With a creative edge and an initial eye towards fashion designing, he attended Houston Community College where he garnered the tools to assist him in becoming a thriving artist. His background in fashion design transforms his canvasses in bold, bright and inviting acrylic colors.

Michael describes art as “the quality, production, expression or realm of what is beautiful or more than ordinary significance." He says that art comes from the creative spirit of a person. Art is a means by which one creates.

TIME FOR A TRADE IN? by Tom Pace

The holidays are very difficult for some people. The Holiday Blues sneak up on us. We think so much about how things are “supposed to be,” and many regrets, fears, and anxieties consume us. But the Christmas season can also be a time in which to make a decision to “exchange” those feelings of fear and grief for a time of celebration.

The prophet Isaiah says that the coming of the Messiah will “bind up the brokenhearted,” and give to each of us, “a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.” (Isaiah 63:3) Perhaps it is time to trade in your ashes and faint spirit for gladness and praise.

This Sunday, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, we will celebrate the season with a special Christmas Festival. At 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 a.m., in our sanctuary, we will experience the powerful and beautiful music of Christmas, and we will consider together how to exchange our sadness for joy. I do hope you will join us.
